Nitriding is what makes H13 extrusion dies last. A gas-nitrided bearing surface reaches roughly 1000–1200 HV — several times the hardness of the base steel — which cuts abrasive wear and aluminium pick-up and multiplies the tonnage a die produces between corrections. Serious extrusion plants re-nitride dies every few press campaigns; this furnace lets you do it in-house overnight instead of trucking dies to a heat-treatment shop and waiting in its queue.

It is a 45 kW vertical pit-type furnace with a ø500 × 1000 mm chamber and a ø500 × 500 mm loading basket. The chamber is evacuated to −0.08 MPa before ammonia is admitted, so the atmosphere stays clean and the nitride layers repeatable without long gas purging. Maximum temperature is 650°C (die nitriding typically runs at 480–560°C), uniformity ±5°C across the chamber, heat-up to process temperature under 80 minutes. The lining is brick-free thermal insulation matting — low thermal inertia and a lighter build. Control is a Mitsubishi PLC with PID regulation and two temperature measuring points; standard supply 380 V, other voltages on request.

The 45 kW unit is the most versatile size in a 30–75 kW range: besides extrusion dies it handles nitrocarburizing, nitriding of tool steels and machine parts, steam treatment and vacuum tempering or aging — useful for a toolroom that treats more than dies. Sometimes catalogued as an aluminum die nitriding oven, the furnace itself is straightforward; the planning point is the ammonia side. You need bottled or generated ammonia, workstation ventilation and exhaust-gas neutralisation — budget for that before ordering, and we help specify it. The factory-standard machine also needs EU conformity work, which we quote openly rather than hiding behind a sticker.

How much does nitriding extend die life?

A nitrided H13 bearing surface at 1000–1200 HV typically multiplies the tonnage a die extrudes between corrections, and each die is re-nitrided many times over its life. With an in-house furnace the die comes off the press in the evening and is back in the tool store next morning.

What does the installation require?

380 V supply (45 kW), ammonia from bottles or a generator, workstation ventilation and exhaust-gas neutralisation. The ammonia installation is subject to separate regulations on the plant side — we say this before the purchase, not after.
